Here at Team TCC we are fortunate to be working with a wide range of athletes. One category of athlete we work a great deal with is elite youth and junior triathletes, and one thing parents and other younger athletes always ask us is:

How do/does my son, daughter or I become a successful triathlete?

Well, it’s not just as simple as being the fastest or being the fittest. Yes fitness is key from the physical standpoint but mental fitness is equally as important to becoming that next Alistair Brownlee or Vicky Holland.

Being mentally prepared and strong can have huge beneficial advantages over your opponents, so whether you are an age grouper looking for GB age group qualification, a youth or junior athlete looking to breakthrough onto your national governing bodies elite pathway, or a tristar starting out on your athletic journey, here are our top 10 attitudes all athletes need for athletic success.

1. Stay focused – Keep that goal in mind and remember the reason why you set it in the first place

2. Set big goals – But, remember to keep them realistic and apply the SMART system

3. Work hard don’t cut corners – There are no shortcuts, there are however, intelligent ways to train

4. Manage your time effectively – Within training, work/school, social and most importantly of all sleep/recovery

5. Continuous learning is essential – If you ever get to the point you think you know it all, remember If you think you know it all, you are not listening.

6. Learn from mistakes – Remember there are no real bad mistakes apart from the ones you don’t learn from

7. Positivity – Stay positive and focus on the good things

8. Be committed – Remember, if it was easy there would be no challenge

9. Bounce back from failure – Failure is just another step on the ladder to success. Nobody was ever successful at anything without failing first

10. Never give up – Get up, get out, get it done!
